The Crumplehorn Inn lease is sold. Yes, after 17 1/2 years at Crumplehorn Inn, I am semi-retiring to Canada with my Canadian born wife Jo-Anne. I first came to Crumplehorn Inn in 1987 and fell in love with it after staying here for a weekend. I took over the licence in the very cold December of 1987. I came here with my late wife Ann and her four stepchildren. I have enjoyed my time here and met tens of thousands of lovely people. I have seen my wife die, a number of my good customers die, my stepchildren grow into adults and local toddlers turn in to customers. It has been a roller coaster ride from the depression of the late 80s, early 90s to the boom that the Eden Project and general financial stability it has brought. The new owners are Alan and Sonja Crockford and they will take over on Tuesday 3rd May 2005.

Crumplehorn Inn nominated as the most haunted pub in Cornwall by Bulmers Cider and as mentioned on BBC Radio Cornwall. The Paranormal Research Organisation visited the Inn on 12th November, and found good evidence!

Panoramic photographs in the form of a slide-show of all en-suite rooms and apartments added. Although not of great quality, they give guests an idea of what each room is like. Sometimes, for operational reasons we can not guarantee to

Pathe News page added

When I was a young lad, I used to go to the cinema to see the latest blockbusters of the day, and I remember the Pathe News newsreels which would give you information about items in the news. The opening trademark shot was a cockerel crowing. I remember being young, that as I wasn't very interested in the news and just wanted the film to start. I have just found the Pathe News website, and have downloaded two preview quality newsreels. The first is from 1935 and shows life around Polperro harbour. The second from 1957 is all about an Australian airman who was stationed in the West Country and is touring in an old Austin A35, visiting his old haunts, which includes Polperro. Click the link, to visit the page and take a nostalgic trip back to the 'old days'.

What people say about us. Easter 2002

From the www.polperro.org website.
Guest Book
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
We have just returned from a holiday in Polperro,it was our 2nd, and we will be returning again in august. We live in Weymouth so we know what seaside towns are like in the summer, that's the reason we head west to somewhere that is not got the candy floss stalls and all the commercialism that goes with it. So just keep Polperro as it is, you have certainly got a winner. Also I would like to say what a wonderful local population you have, everyone we spoke to was so friendly and helpful, especially the staff at the Crumplehorn Inn where we had all our evening meals, and what excellent food it was. Can someone say thank you, to the lady who serves the food in the Crumplehorn Inn with the young boy, who spoke to our grandson Josh. See you all again in August. Best wishes pete Barron + family in an overcrowed Weymouth.

Spring 2002 Improvements

I am pleased to have invested nearly £15,000.00 back into the Inn to improve the standard of decoration to the rear stairs and to the decoration and equipment in the self catering apartments. All the things that I have been slightly, or acutely embarassed about have been replaced.

  • The rear stairs which were very rusty after a wet autumn and winter, were stripped back to bare metal using air powered needle guns. This uncovered deterioration to some of the metal structure and stairtreads, which were replaced with new steel. The stairs were treated with rust inhibitor, zinc oxide primer and two coats of Hammerite. The underside was treated with black bitumin, and some of the wooden decking has been replaced. A two month job, but well worth the effort. The finished result was so good that I had to stand and admire every time I walked past.
  • The whole of the top floor Penthouse (Flat 9 and Unit 3) has been re-carpeted with quality carpet and underlay. Re-decoration is in progress, the tobacco brown woodwork is gone, and is replaced by terracotta.
  • Unit 1, the busiest and largest of the the bed and breakfast rooms has been re-carpeted.
  • The concrete apron at the entrance to the Inn has been replaced providing a nice flat surface after it was eroded by frost in 1996.
  • All of the brown velour bedsettees and chairs have been replaced in the self catering apartments.
  • Following an inspection by the Cornwall Tourist Board in January 2002, and their new grading scheme which comes into force in 2003, it was decided to upgrade the self catering apartments from their estimated 3 star status to 4 star status. All the apartments now have microwave ovens and toasters. The apartments now have a much more comprehensive inventory of equipment, including things like kitchen scissors, sieves, vegetable serving dishes, and coffee cafetieres. There is a printed inventory in each room. There are improvements to safety including fire blankets in the kitchens, and safety plugs on the electric irons. There are also changes to our printed tariff, which include location of the shops and local transport, and details of the sleeping accommodation in each room.
  • Flat 8, a one bedroom apartment which has been used as family and staff accommodation since 1988, has been completely gutted. Everything inside it has been renewed apart from the cooker. There is quality carpet throughout, matching bedding and curtains, and it has received total redecoration and refurbishment. The television in the lounge is a nicam, digital stereo, fast text model.
  • We now have three non-smoking accommodations, an en-suite bed and breakfast room, a one bedroom apartment, and a two bedroom apartment.

In March 2002, the Irish carrier Ryanair announced a daily cut price service from London Stansead to Newquay Airport on the north coast of Cornwall, just 45 minutes from the Inn. The fare is an incredible £9.00 each way.

The Crumplehorn Inn is haunted and that's official!

In early November the Inn was visited by The Ghost Research Foundation who did various tests using sophisticated electronic equipment including a zero lux video camera that can take video footage in virtual darkness. Many tests were done after midnight, when the bar was closed. As we were watching what the camera was seeing and recording to tape we saw small balls of light crossing the screen. The lights are called 'orbs', and an indication of manifestations. The three researchers stayed overnight in one of our apartments where unexplainable things have happened before. When they went upstairs to check on their other camera, the hall light had been turned on. When they awoke in the morning, the window in the bedroom had been opened.

After the busiest Summer and Autumn for years, the Inn is fully booked for Christmas and New Years Eve 2001. The last room was booked in August! Two rooms became available in October and were re-booked within days.

Jim Almand from Santa Fe, New Mexico played at the Inn on Saturday 27th October 2001.

Making the Website even better!

I am excited to announce that John at Surfbaud has added three new features to the Website, and I have added a currency converter to the tariff page

1. Site Search. Want to know about 'children', or 'tariff'? Just enter one word, and the script will find the pages that contain that word.

2. Something I have wanted for ages, an online Enquiry Form, just fill in the dates you want to stay at the Inn, add your contact details, press 'Send', and you will get a reply by return. I can promise you will get a reply within 24 hours, but in reality you get your reply within an hour, and very often before you have logged off!

3. As we are getting so many bookings via the Internet, I have invested in a Secure Server page enabling guests to send credit card numbers over the Internet with absolute confidence. The server uses 56 bit encryption, and the credit card information is encrypted on your computer and then placed on the Secure Server still in encrypted form, I log on to the server using a unique username and password, decrypt the information, and then delete it from the server. I can also send you a digitally signed receipt.

All about Colin Randle, or 'Colin the Conman' as we now call him who fleeced me to the tune of £997.00, but others in the US for $26,200.00. Have you seen him lately?

After checking my Website statistics for August and September 2000, the name 'Colin Randle', is still cropping up as search words, and the page is getting about 95 hits a month! If you think you are dealing with the Colin Randle on my website, please let me know.

My wine suppliers recommended wine to accompany each course, and have a fabulous 1900 Vintage Madeira which I can state is truly outstanding. I was selling it at cost price, just £23.00 a 50cl glass. Unfortunately it is all gone :>(

Cornwall Solar Eclipse August 1999

So what was it like?

The two weeks previous to the Eclipse saw the Inn's busiest two weeks ever, and was only eclipsed (sorry couldn't resist) by the takings, and volume of people that were in the village for Eclipse week. All accommodation providers did fill up eventually, albeit some taking just two or three night bookings. I felt sorry for the couple who walked into the bar at 5 minutes to midnight on the 10th looking for a room! When I went to bed at 1.00am it was the most beautiful clear and starry night, and we all hoped that the weather forecast of cloud was going to be wrong, but alas it was right. The morning started with providing breakfasts from 7.30 outside by the stream, and by 10.45 we had served 90 breakfasts to our 36 residents, and day visitors. The favoured spot to watch the eclipse seemed to be from the cliff path, giving a commanding view to the west of Polperro and hoping to catch sight of the eclipse shadow racing across the bay at 1,800 miles per hour.

The Eclipse was dramatic to say the least, although I wished we had gone up to the cliffs to watch it. It started to get dark at about 10.55, and then at 11.05 was like dusk, and Jo-Anne and I and all the staff went out to the car park with a glass of Jane’s Cider and Rum Punch. At 11.11, it was just as if someone had turned off the daylight with a dimmer switch. It was so fast, and an eerie silvery darkness ensued for a minute and a half. One of my cats sidled up wondering what was going on. The speed of the darkness made me feel a bit giddy, and unbalanced. When the light came back, it came from the valley over the road and it was very odd seeing the dawn coming from that side of the road, when it usually get light from over the hill behind us, and sets over the road. It certainly went a lot colder and there was silence as all the birds stopped singing and were flying back to the cliffs to roost, and as it got light they all came back, and we heard a second dawn chorus, funny eh? We were glad of the pictures that were on television, and we did actually get a chance of seeing the eclipsed sun at about 11.40 through a break in the cloud.

Yes, it was a once in lifetime experience, and all the guests enjoyed the experience. I can understand 'eclipse chasers', once you have seen one, you want to see the next, so perhaps I will see you on the beach in Madagascar in 2001 ;>) The Eclipse wine is excellent, and I still have about 24 bottles left, I also have a few T-shirts left, and just 10 sets of Eclipse Glasses if anyone wants them!
